Kyrenia - Visitor reviews If you are looking for a touch of old world charm while visiting the island of Cyprus, then you have to go check out the capital city of Nicosia. My wife and I strolled through the heart of the Folk Neighbourhood and the variety of craftsmen shops that can be found there is just unbelievable. We were lucky enough to be able to cross over into the Turkish part of the city and we were greeted with the same level of friendliness there. We enjoyed a cup of coffee at a true Turkish coffee shop and the experience was one in a life time. The people of Nicosia are very friendly and accommodating. We stayed a small hotel in the city and it was clean, comfortable and very modern. Shopping is great, especially if you like handcrafts. If you enjoy touring medieval churches and buildings, then you will find the selection of churches to explore wide ranging. |

Getting around the island of Cyprus is not especially difficult, but in order to visit the really cool areas of Nicosia, you will need to be able to walk. While a minor inconvenience to my mother who used her scooter to get around, the city was nice, but not what we had hoped it to be. The people were very friendly and accommodating, and the shops filled with interesting items. You can still feel some tension in the air though between the Greek and Turkish residents. A nice place to visit, but not as nice as the brochures make it out to be. Nicosia is an old city. Even the modern part of it feels old. There is definitely a sense of history in this place. The architecture is neat with its many different styles, but I was a bit disappointed with the shops and what they offered. If you do get to visit the city, definitely bring a camera as it does have some good photo ops. Also, make sure you try the coffee. A bit on the strong side, but very flavourful.
